Opportunity Snapshot

If you are an experienced HR professional with a track record of acting as a strategic business partner to your clients, this position offers unique opportunities and challenges. You will enjoy significant autonomy in supporting eight schools in your region, leveraging your creativity and initiative in developing programs and tools tailored to the needs of each campus and the region as a whole. Pivotal to your success will be your ability to build strong relationships with your regional clients, helping drive a new emphasis on HR as a strategic partner. At the same time, this role is not for everybody: you'll need to be able to balance a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach with an appropriate degree of assertiveness.

You will provide the full range of HR support to the Texas region, and you'll need to be able to relate to and establish credibility with staff supporting technical and vocational education in working class communities -- a "corporate suit" won't make it in this position. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have solid, broad experience supporting employees who work with the public, such as in the education, retail, or service industries. We're looking for a professional who is willing to "roll up your sleeves" and "wear a lot of hats" to get the job done, and who is comfortable interacting with diverse employee populations.  You also will need to be willing to travel extensively within the state of Texas; including overnight travel.  Campuses are currently located in the metropolitan areas of Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin.

Founded in 1995, Corinthian Colleges, Inc is committed to helping students prepare for careers that are in demand or advance in their chosen field. With over 72,000 students, we are one of the largest post-secondary education companies in North America.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources, or related field.
  • Five to seven years of experience in Human Resources, including at least three years as a generalist.
  • A minimum of three years experience with employee relations issues, including investigations
  • A demonstrated ability to act as a strategic business partner to internal clients.
  • Experience working closely with the operations side of the business.
  • Experience with training and recruiting.
  • The ability to shift gears quickly, including getting on a plane tomorrow to respond to emergent issues.
  • Multi-state and/or multi-site experience is strongly preferred.

What's in It for You

High impact -- you'll help drive culture change and establish a proactive approach to HR support that will, in turn, help each campus become an even better workplace and more effective school. You definitely will be challenged, but if you're a good fit for this position you see challenge as opportunity.

Career development -- we are a company that changes students' lives, and we offer the same type of growth opportunities for our strong performers. You'll join a strong HR team and enjoy both autonomy and solid resources.

Strong mission, dynamic environments -- you will support professionals who are helping students build more successful lives for themselves, a mission all Corinthian employees find quite rewarding. If you haven't been on a college campus lately, we think you'll find the active, energetic atmosphere very motivating.

Diverse activities -- not only is this a true generalist role, but each campus has its own unique needs and challenges. You'll invest plenty of time in tactical activities, but the role has a strong strategic component as well.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary we offer an excellent benefit package including a comprehensive healthcare program and a 401(k) plan.

More About Your Role

Reporting to the Divisional Director of HR, you will partner with Regional Vice Presidents of Operations and Admissions as well as the eight campus Presidents. Your mission will be to embrace the eight campuses with a strong sense of ownership, establish yourself as the "go-to" person for all HR needs, and build solid relationships. While you will work out of a home office, you will spend a good deal of time in the schools; at times you'll travel in response to an emergent issue, but we'll also look to you to plan detailed, meaningful visits, in collaboration with each campus' President, to identify and address challenges and opportunities.

Not only will you provide support and services, but you also will be the local face of Corinthian corporate HR on the campuses. We'll look to you to establish relationships with the management and employees at the schools so you can get a firm grasp on their goals, operations, and challenges, as well as those characteristics that are unique to each campus and each market. Each campus is unique, and your activities will include training, performance improvement, employee relations, recruitment and retention, and more.

In the final analysis we are more concerned about the quality of service you provide than the amount of time you spend at each school. However, because relationship building is essential at this phase, "face time" will be important.

The schools offer certificate programs in technical and vocational training, and are located in:
  • Houston (three locations)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth (three locations)
  • Austin
  • San Antionio
Our company was founded in 1995 and we completed an initial public offering in 1999. As of June 30, 2007, we had 8,950 employees in North America, including 3,674 full-time and part-time faculty members.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will bring a strongly collaborative approach, establishing yourself as a partner to management in each of the schools as well as to regional leadership.  In addition, in order to be an outstanding Regional HR Generalist, you will:
  • Leverage your interpersonal skills to coach, guide, and influence people. In HR we do NOT play a policing or gate-keeping role. However, there may be times when you'll need to be assertive, such as when someone is making a decision involving significant risk.
  • Bring the confidence of your experience to establish the credibility of HR as a valued business partner
  • Help build cohesion in the region, between and among the schools and the RVP staff.
  • Remain flexible in a fast-paced organization -- there may be days when it feels like managed chaos.
